Innovation Engagement Speaker Series
The Innovation Engagement Speaker Series at Jefferson is aimed at uncovering several aspects of innovation as it is developing at Jefferson and beyond. The focus will include local, regional and national perspectives, with topics ranging from start-up challenges, innovation across healthcare, venture capital, and prototype generation. The series will also expose participants to opportunities that are emerging in their respective areas. Whether a clinician, researcher, nascent inventor, entrepreneur or just a curious mind, attendees will walk away with something of value.
The series takes place every Thursday from January 26th to March 30th, 12-2PM, at 901 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, in the main lobby. Lunch will be served.

January 26th - Innovation Across the Enterprise: Partnerships and Programs
Vice President, Corporate Development and Innovation, Independence Blue Cross
Terry Booker has extensive experience with business development for large private sector companies and government entities from leadership positions with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses. Prior to joining IBC, Booker served as vice president and head of business development for Grain Communications Group, Inc. a company that builds, owns, and operates wireless communication towers for federal, state, and local government agencies. In this role, Booker enhanced relationships with large government contractors, such as General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and Motorola to facilitate ownership opportunities for multiple federal government agencies.
Innovation Director, Independence Blue Cross
As Innovation Director at Independence Blue Cross, Michelle has fostered and advanced the organization’s human-centered innovation approach through the socialization of innovation concepts, the creation of strong programming, and the facilitation of an idea-generation process that spans throughout Independence as well as with key partners in the community. Michelle loves drawing the creativity out of people and teaching them that anyone can be expansive! She has been with Independence for 11 years, and previously worked in retail where she gained a wealth of customer insights. Michelle is a graduate of St. Joseph’s University.

Osagie Imasogie has over 28 years of experience in the fields of law, finance and business management, healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to co-founding Phoenix IP Ventures, an IP based Merchant Bank, Osagie conceptualized and established GlaxoSmithKline Ventures and was its founding Vice President. Osagie led GSK Ventures in concluding over thirty (30) worldwide transactions, within a 3 year period, in which he invested various GSK R&D non-progressed assets into various companies and/or as the basis of starting new companies.
February 16th - Creating a Culture of Innovation in the Healthcare Setting
Senior Vice President, Regional Advancement, Jefferson Health
Jill is the Senior Vice President for Regional Advancement at Jefferson Health and is responsible for overseeing fundraising across the Jefferson affiliates; including Abington, Lansdale, Aria and future clinical partners. During her 17-year tenure at Abington, contributions to Abington Health Foundation have totaled almost $200 million. Jill holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Arcadia University and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tulane University. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive, a member of the Association of Fund Raising Professionals, Philadelphia Estate Planning Council, and Association of Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP). In 2009, Jill was awarded AHP Mid-Atlantic Region’s Award of Excellence.
Annual Giving Officer, Abington-Jefferson Health
Lori Ferro is the Annual Giving Officer for Abington Health Foundation at Abington – Jefferson Health. Since joining Abington in 2009, she has raised more than $1.3 million for Innovators’ Circle, a program that supports the innovative ideas of hospital physicians, nurses and staff members. Lori earned a Master’s degree in communications from Temple University and a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from Baruch College. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive and a member of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy.
February 23rd - Birthing a Hackathon
Surgeon & Innovator, MIT Hacking Medicine
Ayesha is an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon at Harvard Medical School with over 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She is an endoscopic sinus surgeon and performed cutting edge basic science research at the University of Pennsylvania. She worked to set up the satellite practice for The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts. Recently, Ayesha completed a full time mid-career MBA in Global Leadership and Innovation from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Ayesha has combined her medical expertise and innovation experience to apply a systems thinking approach to solving healthcare problems as shown in her TedX talk. Ayesha joined MIT Hacking Medicine and has been helping to promote disruptive thinking in healthcare through organized events in Doha, Qatar, BIO 2014 and MIT.

A Philadelphia native with more than 35 years of experience in healthcare, Ms. Kinslow began her career in nursing. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Ottawa University in Kansas City, a Master’s degree in Education from St. Joseph’s University, a Master’s degree in Nursing from Temple University, a doctorate in Education from Widener University, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from St. Joseph’s University. She was honored as one of the Top Fifty Business Women in Pennsylvania (2009) and is active in a variety of health care and nursing societies and organizations.
An entrepreneur in health care, financial services and energy, Mike has led teams that built Continuum, a multi-billion dollar global leader in insurance software; Healtheon/WebMD, the largest consumer health information and transaction clearinghouse (chronicled in Michael Lewis’ best-seller, The New, New Thing); and NEOS, a solutions-oriented geosciences company that is leading the field in multi-measurement interpretation (of geo-datasets) and imaging of the earth’s subsurface. Today, Mike is leading Essence Healthcare and Lumeris. Essence operates health care’s most effective virtual integrated delivery network (vIDN) for accountable care. Lumeris delivers technologies, methodologies and learnings to hospitals, payers and physicians committed to delivering high-quality, low-cost and high-satisfaction accountable health care services.
Chief Medical Officer, Independence Blue Cross
Richard Snyder, M.D. is the senior vice president and chief medical officer at Independence Blue Cross (IBC). In this role, he is the company’s chief clinical spokesperson, and he has overall corporate responsibility for medical management, quality management, and all clinical policies and programs. Dr. Snyder currently leads IBC’s efforts to improve the quality of patient care by transforming all primary care delivery to the patient-centered medical home model, which focuses on a team approach to accessible, well-coordinated primary care. Dr. Snyder is active in a variety of State and professional advisory committees, and serves on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Health Care Quality Alliance; The Health Care Improvement Foundation; and HealthShare Exchange of Southeastern Pennsylvania, a regional health information organization (HIO). He is a member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania eHealth Partnership Authority, responsible for providing statewide and national exchange among HIOs. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians.
March 9th - Innovating and Integrating: The Jefferson/Philadelphia University Challenge

Stephen Spinelli Jr., Ph.D., became president of Philadelphia University on September 1, 2007 and has many years of leadership experience in academia, business and philanthropy. Under his leadership, Philadelphia University has become the model for professional university education. As part of the University’s bold strategic plan, Dr. Spinelli led the way in formalizing the University’s signature approach to teaching and learning, Nexus Learning, and establishing the unique College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, which is underpinned by an innovative curriculum based on transdisciplinary, active and real-world learning that is infused with the liberal arts. Dr. Spinelli has consulted for major corporations such as Fidelity Investments, Intel Corporation, IBM Corporation, and Allied Domecq. He has served on a number of Boards and in leadership roles for community, business, and professional associations. As a professor, Dr. Spinelli has been dedicated to his students, providing countless hours of mentoring, coaching and support to those in the entrepreneurial process.

Michael D. Soileau served as Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience at Caribbean Asset Holdings LLC. Mr. Soileau has more than 15 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Mr. Soileau serves as National Director of Partnership Sales and Strategic Alliances at Comcast Corp. Mr. Soileau also serves as a Member of the Board of Directors at National Adoption Center. He worked previously for Comcast, its predecessor ATT Broadband and OpTel. Mr. Soileau holds a B.A. in International Business from the University of Texas at Austin.
Pharmacist & Co-Director, JeffDESIGN, Sidney Kimmel Medical College
Robert is Co-Director of JeffDESIGN at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. The first-of-its-kind for a U.S. medical school, JeffDESIGN exposes Med Students to the concepts of design and encourages them to apply design thinking to solve healthcare challenges with a focus on patient centered design and promotion of the maker mentality. Through his involvement in JeffDESIGN, Robert hopes to re-invigorate grassroots innovation in healthcare by giving providers the tools to design their own solutions to the problems they encounter every day. Robert designed and is building the first health-focused maker space at a US academic medical center; housed in the vault of the Second Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, it is a place where students, providers, and patients will be able to go to learn how to develop their ideas and make them a reality.
March 23rd - Cities as Incubators of Innovation
Director, Entrepreneurial Investment, City of Philadelphia
Archna Sahay currently serves as Director of Entrepreneurial Investment for the City of Philadelphia. In this role, she is responsible for business and economic development in Philadelphia’s tech sector and acts as the City’s liaison with the entrepreneurial community. Archna also manages the City’s StartupPHL platform, which includes the Call for Ideas grant program and a $6 million fund that invests in early stage ventures in Philadelphia.
March 30th - From Cancer Vaccines to Spidersilk Jeans: How Extreme Collaborations Drive Invention @MEDstudioJEFF
Peter Lloyd Jones
Director, MED Studio@JEFF, Thomas Jefferson University
Peter Lloyd Jones is a scientist and designer and hybrid innovator whose work has uncovered fundamental mechanisms in embryonic development and human disease, including lung development and breast cancer. Jones discovers new solutions to complex problems via Extreme Collaborations between seemingly unrelated fields, including mathematics, chemistry, computing, and design in fashion, textiles and architecture. Following completion of his Ph.D. in Pathology at Cambridge University in cancer stem cell biology, Jones conducted post-doctoral fellowships in architectural biology at UC Berkeley in breast cancer, and at The University of Toronto in vascular development and disease. Concurrently, he co-launched Genevieve Dion Couture + Textiles in the US, Canada & Japan with clients including Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys NY. Currently, he is the first Associate Dean of Emergent Design and Creative Technologies in Medicine at The Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), where he founded MEDstudio@JEFF, a new model of design research and practice in medicine at a US medical academy. In common with LabStudio@UPenn, which he co-founded in 2006, MEDstudio@jEFF is dedicated to the discovery of dignified solutions in healthcare using approaches rooted in human-centered design.
April 6th - Regional Life Sciences Outlook - Trends and Opportunities
Managing Director and CEO, BioAdvance
Barbara Schilberg has more than 30 years of experience working with academic technologies and start-up companies in the life sciences sector. Under her leadership as CEO, BioAdvance has committed $26.8 million to 38 seed-stage companies and 24 pre-seed projects focusing in areas including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and infectious diseases. The BioAdvance portfolio companies have leveraged over $1.78 billion in subsequent capital from venture capital, grants, collaborations, M&A activity and product revenues. Eight portfolio companies have been acquired, one company has completed an initial public offering, and one exited through a refinancing. Ms. Schilberg is a board member or serves as an observer on the boards of several BioAdvance portfolio companies including Immunome, Jenrin Discovery, Merganser, Novira Pharmaceuticals and Ossianix.
